Who were the June 2025 Democratic Primary Voters?

The June 2025 Democratic primary in New York City drew a diverse and expansive electorate. With more than 1 million registered Democrats participating, the data provides a detailed snapshot of the party’s composition across age, ethnicity, education, and household characteristics.

Gender

Women comprised the majority of voters at 60%, while men represented 40%.

Ethnic and Racial Diversity

The Democratic primary electorate reflects New York City’s diversity. Key breakdowns included:

  • Likely African-American voters: 20.9%
  • Hispanic and Portuguese voters: 15.7%
  • East and South Asian voters: 7.6%
  • European ancestry voters: 35.3%

Age Distribution

Primary voters skewed older. Voters 65 and over represented the largest single group at 26.6%, followed by those ages 55 to 64 (14.8%). Younger voters were present but in smaller proportions: 11% each for ages 25–29 and 30–34, and less than 6% for those under 24.

Education and Occupation

Among voters with identifiable education levels:

  • 26.4% had completed college
  • 9.3% had completed graduate school
  • 11.6% held only a high school diploma

Occupationally, voters spanned a wide range, with concentrations in management, education, law, and healthcare. Thousands were recorded as teachers, nurses, attorneys, and executives.

Household and Lifestyle Indicators

  • Household size: Single-person households were the most common at 37%, followed by two-person households at 33%.
  • Children: Roughly 19% of voters lived in households with children, while over half did not.
  • Marital status: About 20% were inferred married and 26% single.
  • Home value: A large share of voters lived in households valued above $500,000, with 32.6% in homes worth $1 million or more.

Religion and Other Characteristics

Modeled religion data suggested plurality Protestant (31%), followed by Catholic (20%) and Jewish (9%). About 30% of voters were categorized as unknown in terms of religious affiliation.

Gun ownership was rare, with just under 4% of households identified as owning a firearm. Veteran households represented less than 0.5% of the electorate.


Conclusion

The June 2025 Democratic primary electorate was large, majority female, and notably diverse across ethnic, generational, and socioeconomic lines. While older and higher-income households were strongly represented, the mix of ethnic groups and educational backgrounds underscores the breadth of New York City’s Democratic base.
